CDIO Project 3 - NHS Product - Fall Monitor 

 

The third CDIO project took me in a team of 6 in a design journey to create a medical product for the NHS. Our main goal was to reduce the amount of people attending hospital due to preventable conditions. 


The team and I focused on the elderly falling as falls lead to much more severe conditions especially with elderly patients, but falls can be prevented hugely by identifying the risk of falls and acting to improve strength and coordination where needed or a change of lifestyle. 

 

Falls in the elderly rarely are the cause of death but lead to other conditions which ultimately do. With the elderly having brittle bones the risk of bone damage during a fall is almost guaranteed and can cost the NHS many thousands of pounds to operate and treat with physiotherapy. This device would monitor the elderly for a set time, it would be checked by the doctor where software would identify problems with the pattern that the elderly person walks. It could identify if the patient is picking up their feet high enough off the ground, are they limping or have a significantly weaker leg. It would also identify when a patient has fallen and collects data. 
We decided to create a unit which clips onto the patients waist band or belt so it is close to their centre of mass but also can be easily hidden underneath clothing, especially as been slim profile. 
I designed the product and created it on CAD for it to be produced using the SLA machine. I then cleaned it, removed support material and then spray painted it. I built it using a spring so the devices clip functioned. Using Arduino, the team and I programmed a prototyping board with an accelerometer to read data in the x, y and z axis.
