CDIO Project 2 - Wind Turbine

My second CDIO project explored wind power, working in teams of 6 we designed built and calculated expected results from the turbine. The wind turbine was briefed to be flat pack and suitable for use on a farm environment.

This project took over 4 months to complete. For this project our first integration of CAD produced engineering drawings was used. Also using CAD and a supplied calculation Excel Spreadsheet we designed the blades to aid manufacture. During this course we also had to complete structural calculations as well as blade efficiencies and rotor speeds.

We offset profiles of the blades and had the profiles machine, on the laser cutter, using these profiles with blue-foam we created sections of the blades. Once glued together, sanded and covered with a cloth layer the blades were ready for use.

The frame I designed alongside my team of engineers had sections which folded together to aid in portability and build time, we used steel box section bolted with fishplates and stood almost 2m high to the centre of the hub.
